Clawed Controls Guide
Keyboard, mouse, controller layouts - plus FPS and TPS camera switching in Prehistoria.
Smooth controls separate a tense Prehistoria escape from a frustrating death loop. Clawed supports keyboard and mouse on PC with full controller support on Steam, and lets you toggle between first-person and third-person perspectives - a major comfort option for both exploration and Combat & Dinosaurs encounters. Flatrock Games built the demo in Unreal Engine 5; bindings follow familiar survival-horror defaults with a few quirks around swimming and underwater red-light puzzles described in Getting Started.
This page lists default PC controls, gamepad equivalents, camera settings, and co-op communication tips. Rebind everything in Settings - Controls if you migrate from other horror shooters. Confirm your hardware passes System Requirements before tuning sensitivity - frame drops make aim feel worse than any key map.
Keyboard and mouse defaults
Clawed uses standard WASD movement with mouse look. The demo does not always expose every action in the tutorial, so learn these before your first raptor chase:
| Action | Default key | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Move forward / back / strafe | W / S / A / D | Hold forward while swimming to move toward camera aim |
| Look | Mouse | Lower sensitivity for precision pistol shots on the pier |
| Fire | Left mouse button | Tap for pistol; hold for automatic weapons later |
| Aim / ADS | Right mouse button | Flashlight glare can be bright when aiming - adjust in settings if added |
| Interact / use | E | Doors, buttons, fossils, red-light pedestals, monorail start |
| Reload | R | Ammo is limited - reload in cover per Demo Checklist routes |
| Sprint | Left Shift | Drains stamina in Survival mode - see Game Modes |
| Crouch | Left Ctrl | Slip under obstacles and stabilize aim |
| Jump | Space | Used on land; not primary swim ascent - see swimming section |
| Flashlight | F | Attracts attention in dark zones - toggle off near raptors when possible |
| Inventory | Tab or I | Manage weapons, keys, fossils, access cards |
| Map / journal | M or J | Check objectives if enabled in your build |
| Pause / menu | Escape | Switch camera mode, audio, co-op options |
Mouse side buttons for crouch or interact may not register in early demo builds - community reports suggest keyboard binds are more reliable until Flatrock patches input. If a bind fails, remap to keyboard for that action.
Controller layout
Steam lists full controller support. Xbox and PlayStation layouts mirror typical third-person horror games:
| Action | Xbox | PlayStation |
|---|---|---|
| Move | Left stick | Left stick |
| Camera | Right stick | Right stick |
| Fire | RT | R2 |
| Aim | LT | L2 |
| Interact | A / Cross | Cross |
| Reload | X / Square | Square |
| Sprint | L3 (click stick) | L3 |
| Crouch | B / Circle | Circle |
| Jump | A / Cross | Cross |
| Flashlight | D-pad up | D-pad up |
| Inventory | View / Touchpad | Touchpad |
| Pause | Menu | Options |
Enable aim assist in settings if you play on controller - Utahraptor packs move fast in tight corridors. Co-op hosts should confirm all players use input devices they can aim with; splitting keyboard and controller players is fine.
First-person vs third-person toggle
Press coverage and Flatrock marketing confirm Clawed lets you switch between FPS and TPS perspectives - similar to modern action RPGs where immersion trades off against situational awareness. Third-person helps you see flanking raptors during main square crossings; first-person tightens aim for pistol headshots on the pier.
Open Settings - Gameplay or Camera (exact menu label may vary by build) and select First Person, Third Person, or Toggle. If a dedicated toggle key is offered, bind it somewhere comfortable - many players use a function key or unused letter. There is no confirmed global default like V for shoulder swap; check your build after each major demo update on Updates.
Camera choice does not change puzzle logic - red lights, fossils, and access cards work identically. It does change how much you see during Spinosaurus statue arenas and underwater sections, so experiment before co-op sessions.
Swimming and underwater controls
Underwater progression relies on red-light button chains documented in Getting Started and the Walkthrough. Movement differs from land:
- Hold forward (W / left stick up) to swim toward where your camera points.
- Space / jump does not reliably bring you to the surface - do not spam it in the megalodon area.
- Turn toward each red glow, press interact, then continue until you exit dry.
If you feel trapped, slow down and scan for underwater gates rather than random exploration into dark weed beds. Co-op partners should surface one at a time so nobody misses a button prompt.
Interaction and puzzle controls
Most demo gates use E / Cross on highlighted objects:
- Monorail start button - inside the car, right side.
- Main gate access card reader - after looting the first shelter.
- Museum fossil pedestal - glowing red light inside the museum.
- Fuse boxes and valves - often need the wrench from its box location in the Demo Checklist.
Hold interact if a door stutters - some animations are slow. If nothing happens, you likely lack the key item; backtrack instead of rebinding keys.
Co-op and communication
Online co-op up to four players uses Steam networking. Voice chat is typically handled through Steam overlay or external apps - Clawed includes in-game chat per Steam mature content descriptors. Call out:
- Key pickups (museum key, fossil, green access card after ferry sections).
- Button presses in underwater tunnels.
- When you are reloading or opening menus - raptors do not pause.
Hosts launching Survival mode should agree on difficulty and Game Modes rules before leaving the pier.
Recommended settings tweaks
After binding controls, adjust these for comfort:
- Mouse sensitivity - Lower for ADS, slightly higher for hip-fire if separate sliders exist.
- Invert look - Off for most players; invert Y on controller only if muscle memory demands it.
- Field of view - Increase in third-person if you feel claustrophobic in tunnels.
- Subtitles - English full audio supported; enable for puzzle hints in noisy co-op calls.
- Motion blur / film grain - Disable if they induce nausea during sprinting from Deinosuchus.
Before your first session checklist
- Read Getting Started for pier pistol and shelter access card routes.
- Pick FPS or TPS in settings and test both in the first shelter.
- Confirm co-op friends finished the same demo build version.
- Keep Combat & Dinosaurs open for weapon swap keys (shotgun in second shelter, rifle in Ranger station).
Controls evolve with Early Access-style demo patches. If Flatrock publishes official key art, this page will align with it at launch - until then, verify odd binds in the in-game menu rather than third-party wikis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does Clawed support controller on Steam?
Yes. Steam lists full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation-style gamepads alongside keyboard and mouse.
How do I switch between first and third person?
Open Settings and change camera mode under Gameplay or Camera. Flatrock confirms FPS/TPS switching; exact toggle keys vary by build.
How do I swim up in Clawed?
Hold forward while pointing the camera toward the surface. Jump is not the primary swim ascent - follow red lights underwater.
Why will my mouse side buttons not bind?
Some demo builds only register keyboard keys for certain actions. Remap crouch or interact to keyboard until a patch fixes mouse binding.
What key interacts with red-light buttons?
Use the default interact key - E on keyboard or Cross on PlayStation / A on Xbox controllers.
